Sharks frequent estuaries and river mouths and are mainly active at dawn and dusk.
Stay out of the water if:
- Baitfish are schooling and attracting larger predators.
- A large flock of birds is continuously diving into the ocean and feeding on fish.
- The water is murky due to stormwater runoff.
- You are bleeding.
- People are cleaning fish nearby.
Bluebottles and Jellyfish
Bluebottles and jellyfish are a rare sighting at Xizihwan (Uni Beach) but not uncommon during onshore winds.
First Aid
- Do not rub the sting area with your hand or sand.
- Remove the tentacles that remain on the skin and clothes. Rinse the body area with seawater (not fresh water)
- Place the sting area in hot water or use a hot compress bag – no hotter than the patient can comfortably endure for 20 minutes.
- If the pain persists or hot water is unavailable, use cold packs or ice in a dry plastic bag.
- Reassure the patient and observe them for allergic reactions – if breathing becomes difficult or pain is too severe, seek medical help.
