RISK MANAGEMENT PROTOCOLS
The coach will study the weather and surf conditions and complete a risk assessment before and throughout the surf lesson.
The coach must:
- Identify hazards – Rips, shallow banks, dumping waves, debris/seaweed.
- Assess the risk – Is the surf too dangerous?
- Evaluate abilities – Will specific children/groups stay out of the water?
- Review, apply and monitor – Have the conditions become worse?
- Motivate the beginner participant to realize their full potential
- Adapt and modify the coaching to help each surfer
- Respect all participants’ rights, dignity, and worth regardless of their gender, ability, cultural background, or religion.
- Be a role model and enthusiastic guide in all areas of the surfing experience.
- Educate beginner surfers on the surfing rules
- Demonstrate the need to protect and preserve the environment
- Comply with child protection legislation
- Treat all members with respect and courtesy.
- Complete lesson reports
- Develop good communication skills with the beginner surfers and Water Safety Crew (adults) to provide a fun learning environment.
